Welcome to Portugal, a country that completely stole our hearts. From the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra and the cobbled streets of Porto and Lisbon to the historic churches and green mountains of Braga and Guimarães in the north, and the golden beaches of the Algarve in the south, Portugal has an incredible variety that keeps every day of your trip exciting.
Our journey through Portugal was filled with surprises, and the country exceeded every expectation we had. Beyond its beautiful landscapes, what stayed with us most was the warmth of the people. No matter where we went, we were greeted with smiles and genuine hospitality.
One thing that really stood out to me was how different each region felt. Driving from one city to another often felt like crossing into another country. The scenery, architecture, weather, and even the atmosphere changed so much that every destination had its own unique personality.
Marvelous Stops
Some of our favorite memories came from the unexpected places we discovered along the way. We made spontaneous stops in Tomar, Costa Nova, and Monchique, drove past endless rice fields, olive groves, and hills dotted with traditional windmills, and admired landscapes that constantly changed from one region to the next.
In the Algarve, we cooled off in the crystal-clear Atlantic Ocean, relaxed on its golden beaches, and enjoyed some of Portugal’s best-known dishes. Fresh rustic bread, Bacalhau (Portugal’s famous salted cod, prepared in countless ways), and the irresistible Pastéis de Nata quickly became some of our favorite treats.
The surprises continued as we traveled north. Near Porto, we came across Memória Beach, a peaceful stretch of coastline that was perfect for a relaxing walk and a few photos before continuing our journey.
On our way to Guimarães, we passed through the charming city of Viana do Castelo and discovered Praia do Cabedelo, one of those places that makes you want to stay longer than planned. This long sandy beach is famous for its strong Atlantic winds, making it one of Portugal’s favorite spots for surfing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing. Even though we don’t surf, we loved the relaxed atmosphere. The wooden boardwalk along the dunes was perfect for a stroll, while the views of the Atlantic, the Lima River, and the surrounding mountains made it one of the most scenic beaches we visited.
Before leaving Viana do Castelo, we couldn’t miss the Santuário de Santa Luzia, sitting proudly on top of Mount Santa Luzia. Built in the early 20th century in a Neo-Byzantine style, its white domes reminded us of Paris’s Sacré-Cœur Basilica. The panoramic views from the hilltop were absolutely worth the stop, stretching over the city, the Lima River, the Atlantic Ocean, and the coastline beyond. It turned out to be another unforgettable surprise on a road trip that seemed to reward us every time we took a small detour.
On our way to Nazaré, we decided to make a couple of stops that turned out to be well worth it. The first was Praia do Pedrógão, where we pulled over to stretch our legs before continuing our drive. We hadn’t planned to stop for long, but the wide sandy beach and peaceful atmosphere convinced us to stay a little longer.
Unlike some of Portugal’s more famous beaches, Praia do Pedrógão felt quiet and authentic. There were no big crowds, just a few surfers taking advantage of the Atlantic waves, families enjoying the fresh sea air, and people out for a relaxing walk along the shore. It was one of those places where you can kick off your shoes, walk barefoot on the sand, and forget about the drive for a while.
As lunchtime approached, we found a seafood restaurant overlooking the ocean, and it was too tempting to pass up. Fresh seafood by the Atlantic just felt right, so we sat down for a leisurely lunch before getting back on the road.
Our next stop was Farol Penedo da Saudade, a lighthouse perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the Atlantic. The views from there were spectacular, with the waves crashing against the rocks below and the endless ocean stretching toward the horizon. We spent some time taking photos, enjoying the sea breeze, and simply listening to the sound of the waves. It was a peaceful break before arriving in the lively town of Nazaré, famous for its giant waves and surfing culture.
One of the things we enjoyed most about our Portugal road trip was all the unexpected stops along the way. Driving from Lisbon toward Monchique, we were surprised to come across endless rice fields, something we never expected to see in Portugal. Their bright green color stood out against the blue sky, and we couldn’t resist pulling over for a few photos. I later learned that Portugal is actually one of Europe’s main rice producers, with much of its rice grown in the central and southern regions.
As we continued into the hills near Monchique, the scenery changed once again. We started seeing wind turbines scattered across the mountaintops, taking advantage of the strong Atlantic winds to generate renewable energy. It was the first time I had seen so many up close, and it was fascinating to watch them slowly turning above the mountains.
Not long after, another roadside stop caught our attention. Several pottery shops displayed colorful hand-painted ceramics outside, making it impossible to drive past without stopping. Portugal is famous for its traditional pottery, and the shelves were filled with everything from bowls and plates to the iconic ceramic roosters and beautifully decorated tiles. We spent some time browsing before choosing a few pieces to bring home as souvenirs.
Later that day, we reached Praia de Alagoa, near Tavira. Compared to some of the Algarve’s more famous beaches, it felt quieter and much more relaxed. The long stretch of golden sand, the calm Atlantic water, and the open space made it the perfect place to slow down for a while. We took a walk along the shore, enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, and simply sat listening to the waves. Moments like these reminded us that some of the best memories from a road trip aren’t always the famous attractions, but the places you discover when you decide to stop just because something catches your eye.
As we traveled across Portugal, we weren’t just ticking famous places off a list. We found ourselves taking small detours, stopping whenever something caught our eye, whether it was a quiet beach, a scenic viewpoint, or a charming village that wasn’t even in our original plan. Not every moment went perfectly. There were narrow roads, a few wrong turns, and the occasional unexpected challenge, but those moments became part of the adventure too. Looking back, they’re some of the memories we laugh about the most.
Choosing Portugal for our summer vacation turned out to be one of the best travel decisions we’ve made. Taking our time instead of rushing from one attraction to another allowed us to experience the country beyond its famous landmarks. We wandered through historic cities, relaxed on the beaches of the Algarve, drove through the green hills of Monchique, and discovered charming towns like Viana do Castelo and Guimarães along the way. Every region had its own character, and that was what made Portugal so special. By the time our trip came to an end, we weren’t ready to leave. Portugal had given us unforgettable memories, incredible scenery, delicious food, and plenty of reasons to return one day.

If there’s one piece of advice I can give anyone planning a trip to Portugal, it’s this: rent a car. It completely changed the way we experienced the country. It gave us the freedom to leave the main tourist routes behind, take spontaneous detours, and stop whenever something caught our attention. Some of our favorite memories came from places we hadn’t planned to visit at all.
Portugal is a relatively small country, which makes it easy to explore by road. Driving from north to south never felt tiring because the scenery kept changing. One moment we were surrounded by green mountains, and the next we were driving past vineyards, rice fields, olive groves, dramatic cliffs, or endless Atlantic beaches. The roads were well maintained, driving was straightforward, and everywhere we went, people were friendly and welcoming.
One thing I especially loved was the architecture. Every region had its own style, from colorful seaside houses and medieval towns to grand churches and elegant palaces. Even after several days on the road, it felt like there was always something new waiting around the next corner.
If you can, give yourself at least ten days to explore Portugal. We never felt rushed, and that made all the difference. Instead of simply checking famous landmarks off a list, we had time to enjoy the small moments that ended up becoming our favorite memories.
Looking back, Portugal gave us far more than beautiful places to visit. It gave us quiet beaches, scenic drives, delicious food, welcoming people, and countless unexpected discoveries along the way.
