Exploring the north of Portugal feels completely different from the rest of the country. If you think Porto looks old, wait until you see Guimarães, oh my God! That authentic vintage vibe instantly transported me back in time to old movies. The streets, the squares, the houses, everything looks beautifully preserved, as if the town has been frozen in its medieval glory. The landscapes are breathtaking, the atmosphere feels calm and pure, and the weather is cool and refreshing even in summer.
After completing our visit to Porto, we rented a car and headed toward the northern region, often described as the religious heart of Portugal. This is where the country’s roots run deepest, where Christianity spread, where kings were born, and where many of Portugal’s most important monuments still stand with pride.
Our main destinations were Guimarães and Braga, two cities that hold enormous historical and cultural significance. We chose to stay in Guimarães, a city known as “the birthplace of Portugal” because the nation’s first king, Afonso I, was born there, and from there we planned our visits to the surrounding places, including Braga, one of Portugal’s oldest and holiest cities.
Guimarães welcomed us with its medieval soul, wooden balconies, stone streets, and peaceful rhythm. Braga, on the other hand, impressed us with its monumental churches, grand avenues, and spiritual energy. Together, these two cities offered a perfect blend of history, faith, and charm, making our journey through northern Portugal feel truly special.
Santuario de Santa Luzia
Our first stop was Santuário de Santa Luzia, one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in all of northern Portugal. Perched on top of Monte de Santa Luzia, the basilica watches over Viana do Castelo like a guardian, offering perfect views of the Lima River, the old town, and the endless Atlantic Ocean stretching into the horizon. You can reach the top by funicular, by car, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, by climbing the long stairway (660 stairs) .
The first thing that struck me was how familiar the architecture felt. And then I learned why:
the Sanctuary was inspired by the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris. That mix of Neo-Byzantine and Romanesque Revival style gives it this soft silhouette that stands out beautifully and peacefully.
Surrounding the basilica are beautifully landscaped gardens filled with trees, flowers, and quiet corners that make you want to slow down and just breathe. Even if you’re not visiting for religious reasons, the harmony of nature, architecture, and views creates the best place to stop and breath.

What To See In Braga
Bom Jesus do Monte
Bom Jesus do Monte is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking places I have visited in the mountains. If I close my eyes, I can still feel the fresh, earthy scent of the forest, hear the gentle rush of waterfalls, and see myself strolling along the winding paths. I remember watching the fish in the lake, admiring the colorful rowing boats, and being completely blown away by the artistry around every corner. Unlike many sites hyped by influencers, Bom Jesus truly exceeded all expectations, it took my breath away, and I lived fully in that moment.
A Rich History
The site itself dates back to 1373, when the first chapel was built. The grand Baroque staircase, the centerpiece of Bom Jesus, began construction in 1722 and was completed in the 1780s. The current Neoclassical church at the top was finished in 1811, perfectly crowning the monumental staircase. Walking through a site that took centuries to create, every step and every fountain carries centuries of devotion and artistry, making the experience deeply moving.
The Church
The centerpiece of Bom Jesus is the church, solemn and elegant, perched atop a magnificent Baroque staircase. Its grandeur is striking, and the architecture is stunning. This site is highly significant, both for religious pilgrims and visitors seeking a cultural and spiritual experience.
The gardens: The first thing that grabs your attention as you enter Bom Jesus is the gardens. The lush green bushes, meticulously designed flower beds, and the artistic arrangement of trees create a stunning canvas of natural beauty. As you explore these gardens, you’re treated to an extra layer of beauty with the breathtaking panoramic view of Braga city in the distance.
The staircase: The staircase is a story in itself, divided into numerous levels, with each one featuring corners resembling chapels that narrate the story of Jesus. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful fountains and small terraces or platforms that add to the overall charm and significance of the site.
Standing at the bottom of the stairs and looking up, the breathtaking design elicits a sense of admiration and gratitude toward the creator of this magnificent piece of art.
The Grotto, the Park and the Lake: The grotto, park, and lake at Bom Jesus do Monte offer additional facets of beauty and tranquility. As you continue your exploration through Bom Jesus, you’ll come across a pergola providing a delightful spot to sit and soak in the surrounding views. Beneath this pergola, you’ll discover charming grottoes, adding to the beauty of the park. You can climb the stairs or just follow the path to reach a picturesque lake. The lake is adorned with colorful rowing boats, and it’s a habitat for ducks and various birds. There is a charming coffee shop, offering a tranquil spot where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while admiring the lake view.
The park appears boundless, and time seems to slip away while you continue your stroll. Along the way, you’ll encounter plenty of seating areas, picnic spots, and much more.

Standing at the bottom of the stairs and gazing up at the church and staircase, I couldn’t help but feel admiration and gratitude toward the vision and craftsmanship that brought this monumental site to life. Bom Jesus do Monte is not just a religious site, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage candidate and a true masterpiece of Baroque architecture and landscape design, offering an experience that blends spirituality, art, and nature in perfect harmony.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro is a stunning religious and architectural landmark that immediately captures your attention. From a distance, its white façade and elegant dome stand out against the lush green hills, a beacon of serenity visible from much of the city. The sanctuary is the second most important Marian shrine in Portugal, after Fátima, attracting pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual solace or simply a breathtaking view.
The church has surrounding terraces and gardens provide panoramic views over Braga and the rolling hills of northern Portugal. It’s a place where you can pause, breathe, and fully absorb the beauty of Braga from above.
Palácio do Raio
The Palácio do Raio is a true hidden gem that immediately captures your attention with its striking 18th-century Baroque façade, painted in soft blue and adorned with ornate white stonework. From the moment I saw it, you realized this isn’t just a historic building, it’s a piece of art. I never seen something similar to this in my life or eve in my dreams.
The palace was originally built for João Duarte de Faria, a wealthy merchant, and its architecture reflects the elegance and ambition of the period. Walking past its intricate windows and decorative balconies, you can almost imagine the life of nobility that once unfolded within these walls.
Inside, the palace has been restored and offers glimpses into the city’s rich cultural history, with elegant rooms and finely detailed interiors. Even if we don’t go inside, the exterior alone is enough to take my breath away.
Garden of Santa Barbara
The Garden of Santa Barbara is a small beautiful garden located in downtown Braga. It boasts a variety of roses and seasonal flowers, complemented by a few old arches and a charming fountain. Adding to the charm, right beside the garden rises the castle-like Archiepiscopal Palace of Braga, a historic residence of the city’s archbishops. Its medieval walls, battlements, and fortified appearance give the garden a dramatic backdrop, making it feel like a secret courtyard in a centuries-old palace. It is a perfect little corners to pause, take photos, or simply breathe. Taking a few minutes to explore this park can be a delightful experience before wandering around the city. The area surrounding the garden offers a plenty of local shops, pleasant walkways, cafes, and restaurants, making it a perfect place to soak in the ambiance of Braga.
Braga’s Wide Boulevards & Historic Streets
Walking through Braga’s wide boulevards and cobblestone streets, you immediately sense the city’s energy, you see locals chatting at cafés, children playing around, the founains, and elegant buildings that line the streets, many of them are adorned with intricate tiles and historic façades, while charming squares like Praça da República and Praça da Sé offer spaces to pause and admire the place.
The area around the downtown is also packed with shops, boutiques, and traditional markets which we enjoyed visiting to see local products. Braga downtown is a lively area where you can feel the city’s pulse while enjoying its beauty and charm.
What To See In Guimaraes
Guimaraes Castle
Guimarães Castle is a true symbol of Portugal’s history, standing proudly atop a hill overlooking the city. Its thick stone walls, imposing towers, and medieval architecture instantly transport you back in time. The castle dates back to the 10th century, originally built as a defensive fortress to protect the settlement from Moorish invasions. Over the centuries, it was expanded and reinforced, particularly in the 11th and 12th centuries, becoming a key military stronghold in the region. While we were walking around the fortress, I kept imagining the battles, ceremonies, and daily life that once unfolded within its walls.
We arrived a bit late, so unfortunately we missed the chance to explore the interior, but even from the outside, the castle’s presence is amazing. The view of Guimarães from the hilltop, framed by the ancient stone, is breathtaking, a perfect spot to pause, take photos, and feel the weight of centuries of history that shaped the city.
The Old Town
Guimarães Old Town is simply stunning . I was walking through its narrow cobblestone streets feeling like stepping into a movie scene, every traditional house with wooden balconies, every stone wall, every little square looks beautifully preserved, as if time slowed down just to protect the city’s soul. The entire historic center radiates an irresistible old-world charm, and it’s no surprise that Guimarães’ old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You really feel it with every step, history is everywhere, yet the city is still full of life.
One of the most beautiful and iconic places in the old town is Largo da Oliveira, a square that captures the heart of Guimarães perfectly. I was immediately drawn to the medieval façades, the cozy outdoor cafés, and the peaceful hum of people chatting, laughing, and simply enjoying their day. We stopped for a gelato break, and it was such a lovely moment, just sitting there, admiring the buildings around us and feeling the square’s calm rhythm.
In the center stands Padrão do Salado, a 14th-century Gothic shrine built to commemorate a miraculous victory in the Battle of Salado. Right beside it rises Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, a historic church originally founded in the 10th century and later rebuilt in Gothic style. Together, they give the square its magical, timeless beauty.

While driving through Guimarães, my eyes were instantly pulled toward this breathtaking church, it was impossible to miss. Not only does its architecture stand out with elegance, but the entire scene feels like something out of a postcard. The long, perfectly manicured flowered garden leading up to it, with its central fountain and vibrant colors, immediately captivated me. I remember joking that I felt like it is a bride in the heart of Guimarães, completely astonished by its charm. The church itself, with its graceful Baroque façade and beautiful twin bell towers rising proudly into the sky, left such an impression on me that I slowed down and stoped just to take closer look and some photos. It truly adds magic to the city, blending faith, beauty, and serenity in one place.
St. Peter Basilica (Igreja de São Pedro)
Basílica de São Pedro is one of Guimarães’ important religious landmarks, quietly tucked within the historic center yet impossible to miss thanks to its elegant neoclassical façade. Built in the 18th century, it is much newer than most of Guimarães’ medieval monuments, but it brings a different kind of charm, simple, and graceful.
Torre de Santiago
One of the places that truly surprised me in Braga was Torre de Santiago, a medieval stone tower rising quietly in the heart of the city. At first glance it looks like an old fortress frozen in time, but when you stand in front of it, you can feel the layers of history wrapped around its walls. Built in the 14th century as part of Braga’s defensive walls, it later became part of a Jesuit college, then transformed again when a bell tower and a clock were added in the 18th century. At its base sits a tiny chapel, Nossa Senhora da Torre, built as a gesture of gratitude after the 1755 earthquake spared the city. I loved this mix of strength and softness, the solid medieval tower standing above a delicate little chapel full of peace. Together they tell the story of Braga: ancient, spiritual, resilient, and always reinventing itself.
Palace of the Dukes of Braganza
Palaces are always my favorite places to visit. There’s something about stepping into a world of old architecture, antique furniture, royal dishes, traditional clothes, and forgotten lifestyles that fascinates me deeply. That day, I felt genuinely sad because we arrived just at closing time. We planned to return the next morning, but our schedule was too tight, and life had other plans. Even though we didn’t get the chance to explore the inside, the exterior alone took my breath away. The building is stunning, with its grand stone structure, tall chimneys, and an elegance that whispers stories of Portugal’s nobility. It was built in the 15th century by Afonso, the first Duke of Bragança. The nature surrounding it is truly magical, calm, green, and peaceful. We spent some beautiful time strolling around the palace grounds, soaking in the atmosphere and imagining what life must have been like behind those majestic walls.
Santuary of Penha
While driving in Guimarães, we looked for a viewpoint to enjoy a scenic view of the city. Our journey led us to the top of a mountain, where the Sanctuary of Penha is situated, offering a breathtaking panorama of the surroundings. The site includes a church with ornate architecture, religious sculptures, and a serene atmosphere, making it a place of both natural beauty and cultural significance.
Upon our arrival at the park, what immediately captured our attention was the gigantic size and the unique formation of the rocks. These immense granite rocks appeared as though they were artfully stacked, prompting us to contemplate the mystery behind their shapes. Given their substantial size, it became evident that the way they naturally aligned was a marvel of nature.
Within the park there is a church, a coffee shop, a souvenir store, a terrace, and a sizable parking area provided a range of options for visitors. Additionally, the abundance of picnic areas making the park a welcoming space for various activities and interests.
Our top tips :
- Take your jacket: Whether you’re visiting Bom Jesus or the Sanctuary of Penha, remember these are located at the top of a mountain, making the weather feel cold, especially if it gets windy. It’s a good idea to bring a warm jacket or even a raincoat. If you’re traveling with your child, bring a blanket or a plastic cover for the stroller. - The parking cost at Bom Jesus is only 1 euro, and there are lots of parking spots available.
- All the places we mentioned before (Bom Jesus, Penha, and Santa Luzia) are great for picnic, so take your food and have a picnic somewhere in these parks.
- At Bom Jesus there is a funicular that takes to the top of the stairs for those who find it difficult to climb the stairs.
- When visiting the town of Braga, if you park in an underground parking, be sure to pay your ticket in advance before moving your car using the machines located nearby. If not, you may encounter difficulty at the gate when leaving (the machine at the gate is not for payment) and it is hard to communicate as the only language on the machine is Portugese and also the locals don’t speak English. Some people have a parking card similar to a membership; for more information, consult your host or hotel.
