If you choose to rent a car or drive your own,  here are some important pointers to keep in mind:

1. Driver Requirements: Ensure that you meet the rental company’s age requirements and have a valid  and acceptable driver’s license in the country where you plan to rent a car. Some countries may require an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to your home country’s driver’s license. Also ensure that your credit card has a sufficient credit limit to cover the deposit, which can vary depending on the rental company and the type of car you’re renting. 

2. Parking: When renting accommodation make sure they have a parking, most of downtown accommodation don’t have a parking and if so,  check if it is free parking or for additional charge to avoid any surprises. 

3. Book in Advance: Reserve your rental car ahead of time, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability and potentially lower rates.

4. Offline Map: make sure to download an offline map before you begin your journey.

5. SIM Card: In case you require data while on the road, consider obtaining a local SIM card with ample data to facilitate easy usage of Google Maps.

6. Review Your Existing Coverage: When renting a car, rental companies often offer additional insurance coverage at the counter, which can significantly increase the overall cost of your rental. Knowing what coverage you already have can help you avoid unnecessary expenses.

7. Renting Time: Renting a car around noon is generally a good idea,  returning it at noon provides you with enough time especially if you are coming from far away. 

8. Full to Full Fuel Option: This option is typically more cost-effective because you only pay for the fuel you use, and you avoid the rental company’s potentially higher fuel refill charges.

9. Unlimited mileage: With unlimited mileage, you can explore your destination without constantly worrying about exceeding a mileage limit. You have the freedom to take scenic detours, visit off-the-beaten-path places, and make spontaneous stops without the stress of additional charges.

10. Inspect the Vehicle: Before accepting the car, thoroughly inspect it for any pre-existing damage, such as dents, scratches, or interior issues. Document any existing damage ( take a video of the car) on the rental agreement to avoid being held responsible later.

11. Car Seat: if you’re traveling with a child, it’s wise to bring your own car seat or booster. This can significantly save you money, as I remember a few years back when we had to pay $20 for the car and an additional $10 per day for the car seat.
