A Rocky Start in Slovenia
When we first arrived at the train station in Slovenia, I was taken aback by the number of homeless people sitting on the floor. It was an unsettling sight, and I immediately felt a wave of unease. Then, our attempt to take a taxi only added to the stress. The driver offered us a high price, and when we refused, a strange exchange took place between him and his colleagues in a language we couldn’t understand. Every time we asked for another taxi, the price seemed to double or triple, almost as if we were being punished for not accepting the initial offer. It felt like a scam was in the making, so we decided to walk to our hotel, which was surprisingly just a short walk away, confirming our suspicions about the over charged taxi fare. The first impression was enough to make us question our decision to visit Slovenia, leaving us stressed and doubtful.
When we arrived at the hotel, it didn’t quite match the pictures. The entrance felt abandoned, which only added to our anxiety. But once we stepped inside, we felt a little more at ease. Still, we weren’t sure whether it would be safe to go out that night. The receptionist reassured us, though, telling us that the area was very safe, which helped calm our nerves.
After walking to the center of Ljubljana, our initial worries began to fade. As we entered the heart of the city, we were greeted by beautiful lights and gentle music drifted through the air, and calm, relaxed people strolled by or enjoyed quiet dinners at outdoor cafés. Everywhere we looked, we saw warm, friendly faces, which made us feel more at ease.

Preseren Square
It is the main square and the heart of Ljubljana, . It is named after France Preseren, Slovenia’s greatest poet, whose statue dominates the square.
Preseren Square is considered the starting point for exploring Ljubljana, as it is centrally located and within walking distance of many of the city’s key attractions like Ljubjana Castle, Dragon Bridge, Tivoli Park and more. The Square also features a delightful artificial rain installation in its center during summer months. This interactive feature is especially popular with children, who enjoy running and playing under the gentle mist to cool down on hot days.
Dragon Bridge
The Dragon Bridge gets its name from the four magnificent dragon statues that guard its corners. The dragon is a key part of Ljubljana’s coat of arms and holds great symbolic significance for the city. According to legend, the dragons wag their tails if a virgin crosses the bridge.
The bridge was constructed using reinforced concrete, which was innovative for its time, making it one of the first of its kind in Europe.
Parallel to the Dragon Bridge, there is another charming bridge called the Butchers’ Bridge. This pedestrian bridge is adorned with countless love locks, symbolizing eternal love, much like similar bridges around the world.
From each bridge, you can enjoy nice views of the other, creating a unique perspective of Ljubljana’s charming urban landscape.
Triple Bridge (Tromostovje)
The Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) is one of Ljubljana’s most iconic landmarks. It consists of three parallel bridges that span the Ljubljanica River, creating a unique and functional architectural feature. It serves as a key connection between the Old Town and the newer parts of Ljubljana, blending historical charm with modern design.
When you look at the picture, you’ll notice the elegant pink building, which is the Church of the Annunciation. This beautiful Baroque-style building adds a special charm to both the Triple Bridge and Preseren Square.
Ljubljana downtown is so beautiful to walk around and discover, it has a unique charm that I believe it comes form the quietness. unlike other touristic destination, Ljubljana is not overcrowded which make it more calm and relaxing. Tourist tend to stop at Ljubljana for quick visit before they head to the main attraction in Slovenia which is Lake Bled.
Ljubljana Castle
Ljubljana Castle, located in the heart of the city, atop a hill that you can reach with a short climb or by taking the funicular. Once at the top, you’ll enjoy the panoramic views of Ljubljana and its surroundings. The castle itself is a blend of history and modern touches, not too big, but offers a glimpse into the city’s past. It hosts various events, exhibitions, and even a café where you can relax and enjoy the scenery. It’s a good spot for history enthusiasts and those seeking breathtaking views.
Tivoli Park
Tivoli Park is Ljubljana’s largest green space near the city center. Perfect for walking, jogging, or relaxing, it features beautiful paths lined with trees, flower gardens, ponds, and playgrounds. The park also has an open-air library offering books and chairs, making it a wonderful spot for families to enjoy reading together. Highlights include Tivoli Mansion with art exhibitions and Rožnik Hill for scenic views.
Tips for your visit to Ljubljana
- Ljubljana is a lovely city that can be explored in just one day. I wouldn’t recommend planning an extended stay unless you intend to use it as your base for visiting nearby attractions like Lake Bled, Postojna Cave, or other surrounding destinations.
- I highly recommend taking a sunrise walk up to Ljubljana Castle. The peaceful early morning atmosphere and the stunning view of the city is truly unforgettable.
- Also taking a walk along the Ljubljanica River is a good idea, whether it’s early in the morning or in the evening, the charming riverside, lined with cafes, bridges, and lively street performers, offers a delightful experience.
- Just walk through its streets and discover the charm of Ljubljana as you go.
