Finally, we made it to Plitvice Lakes, the place we had dreamed about for a long time. It wasn’t just another stop on our itinerary; it was the highlight we had been waiting for. The kind of place you see in photos and wonder if it can really be that beautiful in real life. A natural paradise that attracts people from all over the world, even visitors coming on day trips from neighboring countries just to witness its magic.
Because we knew how popular it is, and how quickly it fills with crowds, we wanted to give ourselves the best possible chance to experience it peacefully. So, to be there early in the morning, we booked a night at Ethno House, a charming accommodation right in the middle of the forest, only a few minutes’ walk from the park entrance.
After finishing Krka National Park, we drove toward the hotel, and even that journey felt scenic and calm. Once we checked in, we still had time to explore. We hiked a little, found a few quiet viewpoints, and enjoyed the silence of the forest. Our son absolutely loved the place, there were animals, open spaces, and a playground that quickly became his favorite spot.
Looking back, staying there was one of the best decisions we made. It wasn’t just practical, it added another layer to the experience. Before even stepping into Plitvice, we were already surrounded by nature
Entrances
Plitvice Lakes National Park has three main entrances: Entrance 1 : Rastovača (Lower Lakes) famous for dramatic waterfalls and steep limestone canyons and Entrance 2 : Hladovina (Upper Lakes) known for their larger, tranquil lakes. Entance 3 :Flora which is less commonly used but provides excellent access to the park. For a comprehensive and rewarding visit, many recommend starting at Entrance 2, near the Upper Lakes, and working your way down to the Lower Lakes. This route allows you to gradually descend through the park’s breathtaking scenery, ending with the dramatic beauty of the Lower Lakes and the iconic Great Waterfall. You can also choose one of the suggested pathways to visit the park.

We entered the park at Entrance 3, and we started exploring it by following the wooden walkways and trails. the place was absolutely exquisite with its lush green trees and emerald colour of the lake, we were so excited to discover more of Plitvice Lakes beauty.

The park is vast, with trails and wooden stairs guiding you through different levels, constantly changing your perspective. One moment you’re walking beside the water, the next you’re looking down at waterfalls from above. Here, you shouldn’t rush, you need to take your time and truly absorb it.
It was so incredibly beautiful. The air felt fresh and pure, the gentle sound of water followed us everywhere, and that deep blue color of the lakes… I couldn’t stop looking at it. Every turn revealed something new, yet everything felt perfectly balanced. There was a calmness in the atmosphere that made you slow down naturally. Honestly, everything about it was beautiful.

Waterfalls
As you walk through the park, waterfalls appear everywhere. The first ones you come across are small and gentle, quietly cascading down and creating a soft soundtrack as you move along the wooden paths. They feel almost delicate, like an introduction to what’s coming next.
But as you continue, they grow bigger and more powerful. The water spills over rocks and cliffs in stronger streams, louder, more dramatic, yet still incredibly beautiful. Each turn reveals another waterfall, and just when you think you’ve seen the most impressive one, another appears. It’s like the park slowly builds up the excitement, step by step.

One of the most spectacular sights in the park is Veliki Slap, the Great Waterfall, the tallest in Croatia at 78 meters. You don’t just see it, you feel it before you even reach it. The sound grows louder as you approach, a deep, thunderous roar that fills the air. And when you finally stand in front of it, the scale of it is impressive. The water crashes down with such force that a mist rises around you, lightly touching your face. It’s refreshing, powerful, and almost overwhelming in the best way.
I stood there just watching, listening, feeling the spray in the air, trying to take it all in. Photos don’t really capture the height or the energy of it. You have to stand there yourself to understand.
And what I loved most is that even after seeing Veliki Slap, the park doesn’t lose its magic. Every waterfall has its own personality. Some are soft and elegant, others dramatic and loud. Every turn in the trail feels like a new discovery, and that’s what makes Plitvice so special, it keeps surprising you.

Lakes
What really stayed with me at Plitvice Lakes were the lakes themselves. They are big, open, and incredibly clear, with shades of blue and turquoise that almost don’t look real. Sometimes the water feels calm like glass, reflecting the trees and sky perfectly, and other times you see gentle ripples as it flows quietly from one level to another. The lakes are connected in such a natural way that you don’t always realize how vast the park is, it just keeps unfolding in front of you.
One of my favorite moments was the boat ride that takes you from one side of the lake to the other. It’s a simple ride, but it gives you time to sit, breathe, and just look around. From the boat, the views feel dreamy. The forest surrounds you, the water stretches wide and peaceful, and the wooden paths appear in the distance like thin lines floating above the blue. I didn’t want the ride to end.

The park is absolutely fascinating. Every stop offers a new view that makes you pause. And the wooden boardwalks are something special. They curve gently over the water, sometimes forming soft arches or half-circles, and they blend so naturally into the landscape. Walking on them feels like you’re floating just above the lake, close enough to see fish swimming beneath your feet. They don’t disturb the beauty, they become part of it.
Everything feels carefully placed by nature itself. It’s peaceful, wide, and quietly powerful all at once.
I kept wondering how the water could be so blue. It almost didn’t look real. Later I learned it’s because of minerals and natural elements in the water reacting with sunlight. That’s why the color shifts constantly, from turquoise to emerald to deep blue. No filter needed.

After visiting both Krka and Plitvice, I finally understood the difference. Krka is beautiful and impressive, but Plitvice feels bigger, deeper, more layered. It’s not just about waterfalls, it’s about the entire landscape working together in harmony. Plitvice feels like a complete experience.
Standing there, surrounded by water, wood, and forest, I understood why people travel across the world to see this place. It’s not just for photos. It’s for that feeling, the one where nature reminds you how small you are, in the best possible way.
Transportation

Transportation within Plitvice Lakes National Park is thoughtfully designed to enhance the experience while preserving its natural beauty. Electric boats operate on Lake Kozjak, the park’s largest lake, connecting key points and offering visitors a relaxing journey across its turquoise waters.
In addition to the boats, the park features panoramic electric trains (resembling mini-buses) that run along specific routes, helping visitors cover larger distances with ease. These trains are perfect if you want to save energy or quickly move between different sections of the park, such as from the Upper Lakes to the Lower Lakes. The transport fee is included in your ticket, so simply line up and wait for your turn to hop on.

To make the most of your visit to Plitvice Lakes, I highly recommend spending the night before in one of the hotels nearby.
